DUBLIN, Feb. 15, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The China – Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband – Statistics and Analyzes report has been added to the ResearchAndMarkets.com offering.
China is pushing ahead with 6G research and development
Despite the presence of three major operators (allegedly competing with each other), the development of China’s mobile sector has largely been driven by government policies.
The telecom sector (and industry given the large number of China-based equipment manufacturers) is seen as a crucial element in supporting the country’s economic growth and being at the forefront of technological advances. This relatively progressive stance has helped China become the world’s largest mobile market — at least in terms of subscriber numbers.
China’s 5G subscription rate has grown significantly over the past two years, with market leader China Mobile growing its user base by 50 million (a 30% increase) in the fourth quarter of 2021 alone. China Telecom and China Unicom have joined early in an agreement to share 5G infrastructure.
The two companies expect to increase the number of 5G base stations across the country by 250,000 by 2022 and reach 900,000 sites by the end of the year. With such growth, China is expected to account for two-thirds of all 5G connections worldwide by 2025.
But the rapid adoption isn’t just down to market forces. MNOs were initially reluctant to invest in 5G as they saw low consumer demand for the faster service as well as excess capacity in existing 4G networks. However, the government saw things differently and pushed state operators to invest heavily in 5G.
It may be too early to tell if this bet will pay off, but China is not waiting to find out; The country is driving 6G research and development (with South Korea and Japan being the other two countries already heavily invested in 6G) in hopes of gaining a strategic impact on emerging standards and potential intellectual property rights.
