Jason Day has had tremendous success at the Farmers Insurance Open over the years. In fact, Day has won this event twice and secured a T-3 finish at last year’s Farmers Insurance Open. Day could certainly find himself back in the mix this week at the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open, which begins Wednesday, January 25 at Torrey Pines Golf Course.
Day has won 12 times on the PGA Tour and is listed as a 27-1 longshot according to the latest odds for the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open. Jon Rahm is the 4-1 favorite, followed by Xander Schauffele (12-1), Collin Morikawa (12-1), Tony Finau (12-1) and Justin Thomas (13-1) on the PGA odds board. SportsLine’s proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June 2020. In fact, the model has gained over $9,000 on its best bets since the reboot, nailing tournament after tournament.
McClure’s model predicted that Jon Rahm would finish at the top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. The model also included JT Poston in his best bets to win the 2022 John Deere Classic. That bet reached +5500, and for the entire tournament, McClure’s best bets brought in almost $1,100. At the 2022 Masters, McClure’s model was centered around Scottie Scheffler’s first major championship win of his career heading into the weekend.
Additionally, among McClure’s best bets was Collin Morikawa’s overall win at the 2021 Open Championship, despite being listed as a massive 40-1 long shot. The model was also featured throughout Jon Rahm’s (10-1) first major championship win of his career at the 2021 US Open. Rahm was two strokes away from the lead going into the weekend, but the model still predicted him as the winner.
The same model also nailed a whopping eight majors over the weekend. Everyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.
Now that the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open field is closed, SportsLine has simulated the tournament 10,000 times and the results were surprising. Now go to SportsLine to see the projected leaderboard.
Top 2023 Farmers Insurance Open Predictions
A big surprise awaits the model at the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open: Morikawa, a five-time PGA Tour champion and one of the favorites at 12-1, stumbles this week, narrowly cracking the top-10. Morikawa secured second place at the Sentry Tournament of Champions despite shooting a 72 in the final round.
However, Morikawa has been extremely inconsistent with his putter this season. In fact, Morikawa enters this week’s event ranked 114th in strokes won: putting (-0.056), 133rd in one-putt percentage (38.19%) and 168th in overall putting average (1.642 ). He also ranks 214th on the PGA Tour for 75-100 yard approaches. He’s not a strong pick to win everything and there are far better values in the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open field.
Another surprise: Max Homa, a 22-1 longshot, makes a strong run to the title. Homa has a much better chance of winning everything than his odds suggest, so he’s a destination for anyone looking for a big payday.
Homa certainly has the game to finish at the top of the leaderboard this week. The 32-year-old has won five times on the PGA Tour and comes away with a T-3 finish at the Sentry Tournament of Champions earlier this month. Homa currently ranks sixth in yardage average (5.31), 21st in shots won: tee-to-green (1.236), and 28th in greens in regular percentage (73.61%) . If he hits the ball well this week, he has a good chance of ending up at the top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open. See who else you can pick here.
