Paarl Royals defeated Sunrisers Eastern Cape by five wickets in the 21st game of the year SA20 2023 at St. George’s Park in Gqeberha on Tuesday 24th January. Going into the game, the Sunrisers were in high spirits after beating Durban’s Super Giants by a whopping 124 runs in their previous game.

They were looking forward to doing their best against the royals hoping to ride their winning streak, which unfortunately didn’t happen.

Paarl Royals, on the other hand, had started the game by beating Pretoria Capitals by six wickets. They wanted to build on that and get back-to-back wins. When the Paarl Royals last faced the Sunrisers, they were on the losing side. In this duel, the royals managed to take their sweet revenge.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape decided to bat after winning the toss and went on to post a very decent 130/7 in their 20 overs. JJ Smuts was their top scorer with 65 of 49 deliveries Roelof van der Merwe was their best bowler, scoring 2 wickets for 11 runs in his 4 overs.

For the Paarl Royals, the chase was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. Most of the time, it looked like Sunrisers would definitely be able to defend their total, but it didn’t turn out to be. Jos Buttler didn’t hesitate to beat a well-done half century and ended as the top scorer for the Royals.

The entire script of the game changed, however, when the much-discussed Sunrisers’ Sisanda Magala came along to throw the 18th over Royals skipper David Miller. Choosing the over to go complete with hammer and tongs, Miller sent Magala down for a whopping 25 runs across the park, smashing three sixes and a lone four (hit by Dane Vilas). It took Royals just 18.5 overs to eventually chase the target.
