According to IDC Tracker, PC shipments continued to decline during the holiday quarter and the recovery now looks like 2024

NEEDHAM, Mass. January 10, 2023 – Global shipments of traditional PCs were below expectations in the fourth quarter of 2022 (4Q22) as 67.2 million PCs were shipped, down 28.1% year-on-year, according to preliminary results from the Worldwide Quarterly International Data Corporation (IDC) Personal Computing Device. Tracker. Q4 22 shipments are comparable to Q4 2018 when the market was constrained by Intel’s supply shortages. It’s clear that the pandemic boom is over for the PC market, but despite recent declines, annual shipments for 2022 were well above pre-pandemic levels at 292.3 million units for the full year. However, demand remains an issue as most users have relatively new PCs and the global economy is deteriorating.

“Average sales prices (ASPs) also fell across many channels as excess inventory triggered discounts to spur demand in recent months,” said Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for mobility and consumer device trackers at IDC. “Despite these efforts, inventory management of finished PCs and components will remain a key issue for the quarters to come and has the potential to further impact ASPs.”

Supply-side activity shows that many major players entered 2023 with cautious outlooks, but the consensus is that parts of the PC market could return to growth in late 2023, with the overall market following in 2024. The commercial segment has multiple growth drivers, including the approaching end of support for Windows 10 and a build-up refresh cycle, while the consumer market remains a wild card for 2023 and beyond.

“Back-to-back quarters of declines clearly paint a bleak picture for the PC market, but this is really just a matter of perception,” said Ryan Reith, group vice president of IDC’s Worldwide Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers. “2021 was historical for PC shipments, so any comparison will be biased. Looking back on that time, there’s no question that the rise and fall of the PC market will be in the record books, but there will also be plenty of opportunity ahead of us. We strongly believe the market has the potential to recover in 2024 and we see opportunities for the remainder of 2023 as well.”
