KUALA LUMPUR, Nov. 14 — Alibaba Cloud has doubled the amount of clean energy consumed at its five hyperscale data centers across China in support of Alibaba Group’s recent 11.11 Global Shopping Festival year-over-year.

Alibaba Group’s Digital Technology and Intelligence Unit said more than 32 million kilowatt-hours of electricity it used to support the largest global shopping festival this year came from renewable energy, a daily increase of 30 percent compared to 2021 .

Also thanks to its high-performance computing and innovative technology, the group saved 8 percent year-on-year in computing costs per unit resource from April 1 to November 11, Alibaba Cloud said in a statement today.

Li Cheng, Alibaba Group’s chief technology officer, said the breadth and depth of cloud technology deployment during this year’s 11.11 has once again demonstrated Alibaba’s best cloud and technology practices.

“(This is) through foundational architecture such as self-proprietary technology that powers high-performance computing and database products (as well as) consumer-facing extended reality and live-streaming technologies.

“We intend to continue using these proven capabilities to serve our customers even better, helping them make their own digital transformation journeys more efficient, innovative and green,” he said in the statement.

Alibaba Cloud’s Heyuan data center, the cloud company’s largest hyperscale data center in southern China, is now fully powered by clean energy.

“Alibaba Cloud’s self-developed immersion cooling technology has reduced data center energy consumption, with energy consumption effectiveness reaching a low score of 1.09 — a world-leading level,” it said.

Alibaba Cloud has also partnered with Tmall to leverage the Energy Expert carbon management platform.

“It provided online carbon footprint modeling, calculations and certifications for more than 40 brands in various sectors, including paper & pulp, food and personal care, to help them categorize low-carbon products, identify carbon emission resources and carry out sound sustainability practices to reduce CO2 emissions,” it said. — Bernama
