Amy Schumer’s ‘SNL’ Comments Linking Kanye West to Nazis Divide Internet

Amy Schumer’s subtle “Nazi” smack at Kanye West during her Saturday night live Monologue has divided opinions online.

Schumer returned SNL to host for the third time over the weekend, and cracked a few eyebrow-raising jokes, including a reference to the upcoming “midterm abortions”.

A reference to Yes’s recent alleged anti-Semitic comments drew laughter from studio audiences on Saturday, but others have vented their anger online.

Schumer spoke about the autism spectrum disorder formerly known as Asperger’s. “But then they found out, and it’s true, that Dr. Asperger had such Nazi connections, Kanye,” Schumer said in a throwaway style, before glancing at her microphone and implying something was wrong with it. “That’s strange.”

Schumer referred to Dr. Hans Asperger, an Austrian doctor involved with the Nazis throughout his career. In the late 2010s, a body of research was written that delved more deeply into Dr. Asperger’s involvement with the Nazi Party, with academics such as Edith Sheffer and Herwig Czech concluding that he had participated in a “euthanasia program”.

West has been heavily criticized in recent weeks for his comments about Jews, which has led to him losing business with companies such as Adidas and Balenciaga.

“Quit Amy Schumer,” wrote Twitter user @thedge7, “how dare you call Kanye West a Nazi. SNL is disgusting!!!!”

@DevH79 called the monologue “ridiculous”. They said, “Kanye is bipolar. He was medically diagnosed as such. Since when is it appropriate to poke fun at someone’s mental health? Kanye needs help…not greed and contempt.”

Over on Reddit, Schumer’s “Nazi” joke was shared on a number of forums and became a talking point for thousands. “Low hanging fruit everywhere,” one user wrote, while another replied, “lol right? So brave.”

There were plenty of people who supported and applauded Schumer’s subtle comment, although some were delivered with an insidious compliment. “

“I don’t like Amy Schumer but it was a good joke and she delivered it well,” wrote @fantasticangent on Reddit. “Love her, hate her or otherwise. Amy Schumer is still a much better person than Kanye West,” added @MermaidStone.

Actor Michael Abbot Jr. weighed in on the issue, correcting a claim that Schumer called Ye about anti-Semitism. “Correction.” He wrote: “You have called yourselves anti-Semitic.”

Schumer’s return to SNL turned out to be the “toughest week” of her life. After the show wrapped, she revealed on Instagram how her son was taken to the emergency room for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) on Thursday. Schumer confirmed that her son is doing better now and thanked everyone SNL for helping her get through the week.
