As the Keizer University Auto Show and Chili Cook-Off approach, Professor offers hot tips for the ultimate car buying experience

As the Keizer University of the Palm Beaches outdoor auto show and the Chili Cook-Off approach, Professor Brian Bastin offers his top tips for the ultimate car buying experience. The Auto Show and Chili Cook-Off will showcase the latest makes and models along with delicious chili recipes. The event will take place on Saturday, March 25, 2023 at Keizer University’s flagship campus at 2600 N. Military Trail, West Palm Beach, Florida 33409.

Bastin’s SMARTTOOLS for car buying include:

S – State your needs, desires, and limitations. Just as every good sports team makes a game plan before the game, you need a game plan before you start shopping for your dream car.

M – Set a budget and stick to it. It starts with an overall budget – know your current and potential future income, as well as your non-discretionary expenses.

A – Evaluate your trade-in online or through an independent buyer. Finding the true value of your vehicle before visiting a dealer will save you time and ensure you are prepared.

R – Research your selection online. Find out which vehicles are right for you. Develop a shortlist of a few cars you want to test further, keeping in mind your budget and that a low-mileage vehicle may be best.

T – Talk to your own bank or other banks before going to the dealer. Dealers often have the lowest rates, or they may be the only source to lease a vehicle. You still need to have your options ready.

T – Test the vehicle, dealer and people. While vehicles can be bought unseen, it is important to test drive the vehicle first. Your online dream car may not meet your needs or be as comfortable as you hoped.

O – Orchestrate your game plan. You’ve chosen the car, now it’s time to put your game plan into action by first negotiating the price of the car and then the payment. Remember that you have done your research and gotten your bank offer. Now is the time to get the best deal for the total price and improve the number and price of payments. Remember that car leasing has its advantages too.

O – Buy only the vehicle and products that add value and fit within your budget. Once the negotiation is complete, you will see a menu with all kinds of products. Extended warranties, spare keys and eco-friendly products are just a few of the items available. Only buy products that add value, fit your budget and are easy to manage.

L – Unless you get what you want, go. Remember that you always have another car available, so take the time to shop wisely.

S – Enjoy the victory. At the end of the day, the transaction has to work for both parties. The merchant provides many services and needs to be compensated for those services, and buyers need to be treated fairly and respectfully. The SMART TOOLS plan offers a win-win experience for both the buyer and the dealer. Enjoy your new ride!
