A departmental bench consisting of judges Kalyan Rai Surana and Devashis Baruah passed the order on Friday after attorney Utpal Goswami pleaded guilty to the charges.

The attorney had previously filed a motion that was pending in the Court of the Jorhat Additional Circuit Judge. He had made derogatory remarks about her clothing, alleging that she had not heard the lawyers’ request, was trying to control the court and behaving like the mythical demon “Bhasmasur”.

The Supreme Court then filed a suo motu case on the matter.

In an affidavit requested by the Supreme Court, Goswami pleaded guilty to the charges and issued an unconditional apology.

The Supreme Court subsequently sentenced the lawyer and released him on bail of Rs 10,000.

“In view of the defendant’s/contemporary’s guilty plea, we hereby convict the accused of his guilty plea under the provision of Section 14 of the Courts Act 1971,” read the order.

The matter will be heard again on March 20.
