Bob Dylan is constantly on the road, but rarely gives interviews. Despite this, he recently chatted with The Wall Street Journal while promoting his new book, The Philosophy of Modern Song.
During the rare interview, the singer/songwriter opened up about the TV shows he’s currently playing, modern artists he listens to, and the ins and outs of social media.
“Coronation Street, Father Brownand some early Twilight Zones,” he said of the TV shows he watches. “I know they’re old-fashioned, but I feel right at home. I’m not a fan of packaged programs or news shows. I never look at anything smelly or nasty. Nothing gross, nothing dog ass.”
Speaking of social media, he said the platforms “bring happiness to a lot of people.” He also notes that some people even find love through social media. “It’s fantastic when you’re a social person; the lines of communication are wide open,” he added. “You can rearrange everything, erase memories and change history. But they can also divide and separate us.”
When asked how he keeps in shape these days, he said it’s all about boxing and sparring. “It’s functional and detached from trends,” he says. “It’s a limitless playground, and you don’t need an app.” He says he keeps touring because “it’s a perfect way to remain anonymous and still be a member of the social order. You are the master of your destiny. But it’s not an easy path, it’s not fun and games.”
The singer also explained why he thanked “the crew at Dunkin Donuts” in his new book: “They were compassionate, supportive and went the extra mile.”
There is an extended version of the interview on his website. In this version, Dylan talks about modern artists he likes, including Klaxons and Julian Casablancas.
“Artists and songwriters recommend things to me,” he said. “With others, I just wake up and they are there. I’ve seen some live. The Oasis Brothers, I like them both, Julian Casablancas, the Klaxons, Grace Potter. I’ve seen Metallica twice. I made a special effort to see Jack White and Alex Turner. Zach Deputy, I spotted him the other day.
“He’s a one-man show like Ed Sheeran, but he sits down when he’s acting. I’m a fan of Royal Blood, Celeste, Rag’n’Bone Man, Wu-Tang, Eminem, Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, anyone with a feel for words and language, anyone whose vision matches mine.”
