ChatGPT or Google: Who Provides the Best Answers?

ChatGPT is growing in popularity due to its advanced conversational and technical skills. You can ask the chatbot any question you want and it will give an answer within seconds. Google search can also help you find answers to your questions. While it’s not a search engine, should you be using ChatGPT instead of Google as your one-stop shop for information?

Preply, a language tutoring marketplace, tested ChatGPT and Google’s “intelligence” by both asking a series of questions and analyzing their answers. Responses were measured using criteria such as context, detail, efficiency, functionality, impartiality, and more. Here’s how they both performed.

The first set of questions consisted of simple general knowledge questions and requests for “how-to” explainers. Some of the questions were, “How do you tie a tie?”, “Who is the President of the United States?”, and “How many ounces in a cup?”

ChatGPT’s inability to access information published after 2021 made Google the winner for this section, as the search engine was able to provide more up-to-date and concise information. Surprisingly, as the questions grew more complex, the odds against Google shifted.

The series of intermediate questions was more complicated and often subjective in nature, covering subjects that required in-depth explanation rather than a simple answer. These questions included, “What is the best breed of dog?” and “How to lose weight fast?”

ChatGPT won this section 15 to 6. The chatbot’s ability to provide answers in a human-like format with context and detailed explanations makes it an ideal tool for abstract or complex questions that require more than a simple answer.

“ChatGPT’s responses often read smarter and more mature, like the dialogue you would expect from a trusted teacher,” according to the study.

“Trustworthy” is a keyword to keep in mind – ChatGPT is designed to respond in an authoritative tone and provide information that sounds plausible, but may not be entirely accurate.

The advanced questions were more thought-provoking with existential themes such as “Is God real?” and “What is the purpose of life?” According to Preply’s metrics, ChatGPT won seven to four and provided more thoughtful and detailed answers. While it’s impossible to answer the question, “Does God exist?” Preply explained ChatGPT’s victory thus:

The results of the 40 questions gave ChatGPT a 23-16 win with a tie. The prudence and context allowed the chatbot to outperform Google on both intermediate and advanced questions despite not having access to up-to-date information. Given these results, if the chatbot ever connects to the internet, it’s fair to say that it could surpass the capabilities of Google search.

Microsoft announced its AI-enhanced Bing, which integrates ChatGPT into the search engine. Once the improved Bing is available to the public, it will give users a glimpse into the future of search engines.
