BARAMULLA, MAY 27: To raise awareness of menstrual hygiene management and break the unnecessary taboo and stigma attached to the topic, a program on “Menstrual Hygiene and Reproductive Health” organized by Baramulla, here.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Baramulla, Dr. Syed Sehrish Asgar, led the function as the main guest, while Chief Education Officer Baramulla, Balbir Singh Raina, Tehsildar Baramulla, director of several institutions, as well as a large number of female students showed their participation.
The awareness program was organized as a pre-event in connection with Menstrual Hygiene Day, celebrated annually on May 28th, to highlight the importance of good menstrual hygiene management.
On this occasion, Dr. Sehrish took up the topic and discussed the challenges of our society in connection with menstrual hygiene education in colleges/schools. He emphasized the essential period-friendly initiatives and sanitation needed in schools and colleges.
The DC reiterated that the county government has taken various initiatives to address the challenges and said many vending and incineration machines have been installed at educational institutions across the county.
Regarding the initiative, the DC said this project will simultaneously help raise awareness of the benefits of adopting hygiene practices and overcome the issues of the availability and affordability of sanitary napkins for women in the region.
She went on to say that this much-needed initiative will help serve a key area of women’s health and will therefore be of great benefit to the community at large.
In briefing on the installation of machines in educational institutions, the DC said that 70% of schools with the facility are at capacity and initiatives are being taken to equip all schools across the district with vending and incineration machines.
In addition, the DC urged teachers to raise students’ awareness of health and hygiene, and urged them to properly guide and raise awareness of the daily social issues.
During the program, the students also presented various colorful cultural events, which received great applause from the participants.
