If you have been a T-Mobile customer in the past few years, your data may have been compromised as a result of a criminal cyber attack. Fortunately, you may be entitled to monetary compensation from a class action settlement.
“If you’re with T-Mobile, you only have a few valuable weeks to file a claim for compensation for a massive data breach from T-Mobile.”
Claims must be filed on or before January 23, 2023. In this article, I will tell you what you need to know about the data breach and how to make your claim.
What you need to know about T-Mobile’s recent data breach
In August 2021, T-Mobile announced that the company’s systems were subjected to a criminal cyber attack that compromised the data of millions of current, former and potential customers.
While financial information was not disclosed, some social security numbers, names, addresses, date of birth, and driver’s license/ID information were compromised. Unfortunately, this opens the door to identity theft.
T-Mobile is now offering financial compensation and free identity theft protection to potentially affected customers. Additionally, if you’re affected by the data breach, you’re likely entitled to two years of free identity defense services.
“If you’ve been a T-Mobile customer for a while, you can get up to $25,000 depending on the damage you’ve sustained. Forget that,” says money expert Clark Howard. “People will only see $25,000 in the most extreme cases.”
In most cases, customers are eligible for an alternative cash payment of $25 or $100 if you were a California resident on August 1, 2021.
However, if you have already paid money to protect yourself from identity theft because of the data breach, you may be able to claim up to $25,000 in reimbursement. For more information on out-of-pocket loss compensation, see question #7 on the T-Mobile Settlement FAQ page.
How to submit your claim
Luckily, if you’re eligible, T-Mobile offers a cash payout and two years of free identity theft protection.
“If you were a T-Mobile customer and suffered any part of this data breach, you can file a lawsuit,” Clark says.
To submit your claim, visit the T-Mobile Settlement website and click Submit a Claim.
If you received a privacy breach notification from T-Mobile, you will find a unique class member ID at the top of the notification. You can enter it to log in or request a class member ID to create an account.
