The first week of games is over and the 2nd set of games is upon us. Wales and Iran played their second game of the competition in a crucial Group B clash. The first half of the game ended in a draw, with both sides having their fair chances. The second half was full of drama, however, as Wales goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey received a red card. However, with an extra man, Iran managed to win the game by scoring two goals in extra time.

Rouzbeh Cheshmi opened the scoring for Iran in the 90+8 minutes with a long ranger. 3 minutes later, Ramin Rezaeian scored the 2nd goal to break Welsh hearts and potentially end their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds.

It was an unnecessary challenge from the goalkeeper even though the team had a defender at their back. Fans certainly weren’t happy with Hennessey’s tackle and took to social media to react.

Football fans react to Wayne Hennessey’s red card in the match against Iran

Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey saw his own defender from behind and ran towards Mehdi Taremi, who had his eye on the ball. Hennessey’s kick missed the ball and collided with Taremi. The referee gave the goalkeeper a red card, who was replaced by Leicester goalkeeper Danny Ward.

The referee gave the goalkeeper a yellow card. However, Iran protested when Taremi hit the ground due to the contact. The referee decided to check the VAR and later changed his decision to a red card. This was the first red card of the FIFA World Cup.

Wales are now bottom of the table with just one point from two games. It has all but ended its World Cup run. However, mathematically they are in the race for the round of 16 and have to rely on the results of the other team.

The USMNT meets England later today in their 2nd game of the competition. Everything is at stake for the US team as they drew their first game against Wales. They will be ready to bounce back against competition favorites England and secure their place in the Round of 16.
