Silchar: Eight students at an educational institution in Karimganj district in southern Assam have been suspended for filming a role on social media.
A film showing eight students (in school uniforms), including girls, from Jafargarh Extended Higher Secondary School in Baraigram dancing to a popular Hindi song reportedly went viral on social media. Established in 1956, the school falls under the Karimganj South Assembly Constituency of Karimganj District. The role caught the attention of school authorities, after which the students were suspended.
Principal Debashish Sen told reporters that they (members of the school board) held a meeting after learning about the role and then suspended the eight students for violating policy. This (student suspension) will forewarn the other students not to do the same, he said.
He said the suspended students, including five girls and three boys, did the role on Tuesday during recess time and no teacher was present in the classroom at the time. The role later surfaced on social media and went viral. On Wednesday they organized a meeting at the school, after which the decision was made to suspend the students. All the students, seven of whom are from class XII and one from class IX, have been told they can only come to school during exams, he said. He also said there was a staff shortage at the school.
After the role surfaced on social media, netizens berated the students for committing an “offensive” act and called for action against them.
