Five online architecture and design events in January

We have selected five current and upcoming online events listed in the Dezeen Events Guide taking place in January 2023, including a series of online lectures called Egyptomania, hosted by the British Museum! and the DesignTO design festival.

Also featured will be Showcase Japan, a lecture series by RIBA, and The Architecture of Virtual Space.

New York-based homewares platform Shoppe Object and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) have partnered to create an online marketplace to showcase and sell Japanese products.

The exhibition, entitled Showcase Japan, presents 25 Japanese brands and aims to make them accessible to the US market.

The marketplace includes homeware, fashion and lifestyle products such as jewelry, candles, vases, bedding, clothing and kitchen items.

January 20-29, 2023, various locations in Toronto, Canada and online

DesignTO is a design festival held throughout Toronto in January. In addition to the face-to-face events, including exhibitions, installations and guided tours, the festival hosts online events for global participants.

The virtual events include lectures on topics such as waste management, circular construction and equal opportunities for health in public spaces.

DesignTO also hosts online portfolio reviews powered by local design communities that provide feedback and analysis for Toronto-based brands.

RIBA talks in January
January 24-31, 2023, online

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is presenting a series of online lectures in January.

Two of the talks are part of the organization’s Building Stories series, in which architects discuss the process of developing a RIBA award-winning building.

In January, Hero Bennett, Director and Head of Sustainability at Max Fordham, speaks with Architype Architects about the Harris Academy in Sutton, while Dav Bansal, Partner at Glenn Howells Architects, talks to Architects about the design of the Ibstock Place School Refectory and The Alice public house Hawthorn voices Maccreanor Lavington and De Matos Ryan.

RIBA also hosts a sustainability mastermind, allowing members to support each other and discuss the AECB building standard.

The final talk will address Neurodiversity Friendly Architecture as part of the Just Equity Diversity Inclusion (JEDI) program.

The talks will take place on January 24, 25, 26 and 31, 2023.

The architecture of the virtual space
January 25, 2023 online

Five American and South Korean architecture firms have teamed up with online gallery The Unbuilt Gallery to exhibit virtual meditation spaces.

Ricardo Solar from San Francisco, Forma Rosa Studios from New York, Beom Jun Kim and No Architecture and Saul Kim from Seoul are the studios presenting their work in the exhibition.

The spaces will be developed using virtual reality and real-time graphics and can be explored on January 25th at 6pm New York time or 11pm London time.

Egyptomania! is a series of online talks hosted by the British Museum exploring how ancient Egypt influenced 20th and 21st century architecture.

The three lectures deal with tourist art and its origins in Egypt, the works of modern artists such as Alberto Giacometti, Henry Moore and Mahmoud Mokhtar, and the buildings shaped by the period, including cinemas, mills and synagogues.

Art historian Dan Cruickshank will lead discussions with Egyptologist Dr. Benjamin Hinson; Curator of Arts and Visual Culture at Science Museum, Anna Ferrari; and writer and researcher, Chris Elliott.

The talks take place in parallel with the exhibition Hieroglyphs: Unlocking Ancient Egypt, which runs from October 13, 2022 to February 19, 2023.
