Galaxy Watch 5 update brings new security patch & Ball watch face

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro get a new software update. It’s a relatively large update, with the download package for the latter weighing in at over 500MB. However, the changelog only mentions some stability improvements and a redesigned Ball watch face. The latest November 2022 security patch is also in tow. The new firmware version for devices is R9**XXU1AVK7 (via).

According to Samsung’s release notes, this update brings stability and reliability improvements to improve notifications and “device behavior”. However, the changes are unlikely to be noticeable to users. However, what everyone would see immediately after updating their Galaxy Watch 5 is the new watch face. While the ball dial itself isn’t new, you now get redesigned backgrounds.

With this watch face you can already set a multicolored pattern as a background. Samsung has now updated it so you can cheer for your favorite team during this FIFA World Cup. According to the latest update for the Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, the ball watch face features the national flag or flag colors of the 32 countries participating in the mega sporting event as a background.

As before, the ball watch face is still in the graphical section of the watch face menu in Samsung’s Galaxy Wearable app. However, those who haven’t updated their Galaxy smartwatch won’t see the flag backgrounds. You only see the existing background options.

The Galaxy Watch 5 series also gets the November security patch

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 5 series smartwatches, ie all devices running Wear OS, are said to receive monthly security updates. These updates fix various issues with the Google version of Wear OS as well as the Korean company’s custom skin One UI Watch. The earlier series received the November security patch earlier this month. The newer models now also follow the suite.

This update for the Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is already rolling out worldwide. If you haven’t received it yet, you will get it soon. Listen for a notification from the Galaxy Wearable app on your connected smartphone. You can also manually check for updates from the same app. From the home screen, tap Watch settings, then tap Watch software update. Now select Download and Install option. If an update is available, you will be prompted to download it. You can also find the same menu in the Settings app on the watch.
