Go with the flow! This 28-year-old meta employee pays $300,000 for a condo on a cruise ship so he can be WFH and travel the world

A 28-year-old man who is part of Reality Labs, Meta’s augmented and virtual reality division, paid a whopping $300,000 for a 12-year lease on a cruise ship condo so he could have the Travel the world and work remotely at the same time.

According to a report in
CNBCAustin Wells, who “loves to travel the world” and currently lives in San Diego, has rented a residence aboard one of the world’s most luxurious cruise lines for at least three years so he can sail, work remotely and also see the hidden Places this globe has to offer.

Wells paid nearly $300,000 for a 12-year lease on Discover, an entry-level 25-square-foot studio that includes a murphy bed, pantry, desk, and separate shower room.

Dubbed the MV Narrative, the cruise ship, which consists of more than 500 private rooms and apartments, features full medical services, private kitchens, co-working space, spa, fitness center, farmers market and more.

During the voyage, the cruise will host around 1,000 residents who will live on the boat either permanently or temporarily.

But what happens when Wells sees the European cities during his cruise, how will he manage his work?

“My working hours will shift to evenings, nights and very early morning hours. But that opens up an opportunity for me to … maybe see a city from noon to mid-afternoon and then start my work day around 6 or 7 p.m.,” Wells said
CNBC during an interview.

This is likely the first time Wells has had the opportunity to have a regular job and consider working and living in a floating apartment complex.

MV Narrative, an upscale cruise ship, offers 11 types of onboard residences, with the largest “Global” offering 1,970 square feet of up to four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a walk-in closet, a large balcony, and a dining room that at least six people can sit.

The cruise ship is currently under construction in Split, Croatia, from where it will set sail in 2025 and sail through Rome, Naples, Sapri, Marsala, Venice, Albania, Croatia, Greece and Turkey, among others.

“I go from this model where you want to go anywhere, you pack a bag, you get on a flight, you rent a room, to now my condo, my gym, my doctors and dentists, all my grocery stores the world with me,” adds the 28-year-old Meta employee.
