Earlier this year, Apple released iOS 16.4 and updated the WebKit engine, giving web apps access to push notifications and the ability to add shortcuts to the home screen. The latest app to take advantage of this feature is Google Chrome.
According to a post on Threads by Chris Messina, who is credited with inventing hashtags, the latest Google Chrome update for iOS allows users to add a shortcut to their favorite websites on the home screen. Previously the feature was limited to Apple’s own Safari, but now Chrome users can quickly access websites without having to rely on Safari.
Similar to how the feature works on Safari, if a user adds a shortcut to a webpage on their home screen, tapping it will open the page as a normal app instead of opening Chrome. If you’re using iOS 16.4 or later, the web app shortcut can also send push notifications like natively installed apps.

Apple seems to be pushing web apps lately, with the macOS Sonoma beta also allowing users to add web app shortcuts using Safari. Last month, Chrome for iOS received several new features such as the ability to search for a product using the camera, improved translation capabilities, and even the ability to create calendar events from within the browser itself.
