Google TV gets a performance boost thanks to the latest update

Even the best Google TV streaming devices could use some improvement, and thankfully, Google has provided a steady stream of updates to its platform and devices, making it one of the best media streaming devices right now. With the latest update coming out now, Google intends to offer users a smoother experience by boosting the devices’ performance while freeing up storage space.

Google announced the update through its Google TV support page, revealing changes that will improve the experience for users going forward. One of the major adjustments of this update is freeing up storage space on devices by optimizing and reducing app size. The company is rolling out an app hibernation feature that “automatically forces apps to hibernate if they’re not used for more than 30 days.”

First introduced in Android 12, this hibernation feature gives users the freedom to free up storage space without deleting the app from a device. The feature can achieve this by forcing the app to stop and also deleting all temporary files, optimizing storage space and prioritizing it over performance. The great thing is that the app can still be accessed and will be woken from sleep if used.

In addition to the changes above, Google leverages Android app bundles, which discounts Google TV apps by up to 25 percent. Google states that these improvements are already rolling out to devices running Android 12 or later. And as if all that weren’t enough, there are some additional optimizations that make the experience seem even faster than before. With the update, the wake-up time has now been shortened along with the start-up sequence, and remote controls should also feel a little more responsive.

These kinds of features aren’t that important when you’re running apps on some of the best Android smartphones and devices available, but when you’re using a product with minimal storage like Google TV, every little bit counts and tweaks like this can be a godsend. So be sure to check your settings menu and bring your Google TV device up to date to really feel the difference.
