Preview: The Gujarat Giants will hope to bounce back from a disastrous loss to the Mumbai Indians when they take on UP Warriorz, the only team not yet featured, in Navi Mumbai on Sunday.
The UP Warriorz-Gujarat Giants clash is the second game of the first double-header of the inaugural Women’s Premier League, which sees Royal Challengers Bangalore take on Delhi Capitals at Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai in the afternoon.
The Giants return to DY Patil Stadium in Nerul, Navi Mumbai – the venue where they were thrashed in 143 runs by the Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai Indians. Mumbai rode Skipper Harmanpreet’s 30-Ball 65 and key shots from Hayley Matthews (47) and Amelia Kerr (45 not out) to place a commanding 207/5 on the board.
Gujarat then suffered a blow early in their chase as Beth Mooney retired injured in the first over. The Ahmedabad-based franchise then began losing wickets on a regular basis and was limited to 64/9, with Saika Ishaque the Mumbai bowlers’ choice at 4/11. After starring with the stick, New Zealand all-rounder Kerr made a valuable contribution with the ball with a move of 2/12.
