Kiwi, a two-year-old Indian Ring-necked Parakeet from Dartmouth, NS, is an internet celebrity, and his rise to fame happened by accident.
The talkative parrot first rose to fame when owner Tamara Mercer posted a video of him that went viral on TikTok.
“The first video I posted of him was the first time he told me he loves me and that went crazy and from there we took TikTok to 2.5 million followers, and then I started my YouTube adventure a few months ago,” Mercer said.

Her YouTube channel Tamaras Blue Chicken has 300,000 followers and has earned them a YouTube Creator Award.
Mercer said her content brings an immense amount of joy to fans and believes people will turn to her social media pages when they’re having a bad day.
“Just because he’s so positive and loving and it definitely puts a smile on her face and that’s what we ideally want to spread is positivity and love,” she said.
Kiwi is great at giving, calling her family dog and has recently learned how to wave. His impressive vocabulary is around 100 words.
“He will come close to my mouth and put his beak on my lips. Just like that and then I’ll speak and he’ll usually understand the words,” she explained.
Mercer has recently started selling kiwi fruit, which has been very successful. Kiwi plushies and keyrings with some of his sayings are sent to Malaysia, Spain and Australia, to name just a few.
“It’s exciting to see how many places people are seeing Kiwi to the point where they’re getting goods from Kiwi,” Mercer said.
She said she’s fulfilling orders daily to keep up with requests, which has now turned into an unlikely business venture.
