Is your iPhone battery draining too fast? This guide is designed to show you a variety of tips to help you reduce your iPhone’s battery drain and get the most of your handset’s battery life.
Our handy guide shows you exactly what to do to make your battery last longer every time you charge your handset. There are a variety of settings you can adjust on your iPhone to reduce battery drain and extend battery life.
Find out what’s draining your battery life
You can easily find out which apps are draining your iPhone battery life. To do this, go to Settings > Battery and scroll down until you see Last 24 hours and Last 10 days, select Last 24 hours option and scroll down.
You will then see the battery usage by app. This shows you what percentage of your battery usage is being used by specific apps. If you click Show Activity you will see the actual time this app has been used in the last 24 hours. What’s interesting here is that there are two listings, one for screen usage when you’re actually using the app, and the other for background usage, when the app is doing something in the background when you’re not using it.
If you notice high usage of a particular app in the background, it can drain your battery if an app in the background consumes a lot of battery power when not in use. It’s worth investigating to see what feature of the app is using the battery and if it’s actually needed.
Adjust the screen brightness of your iPhone
One of the easiest changes you can make to improve your handset’s battery life is to adjust the screen brightness. The brighter the display of your iPhone, the more battery power is consumed. Even a slight reduction in brightness can affect battery life.
To do this, go to Settings > Display & Brightness and drag the slider to a lower setting. You can also change the settings on your device to Auto Brightness. This automatically adjusts the brightness to the current lighting in your environment. To do this, go to Settings > Display & Brightness, then enable Auto-Brightness.
Update your iPhone to the latest software
A software issue or bug could drain your iPhone’s battery, it is important to update your iPhone to the latest version of Apple’s iOS software. You can do this by going to Settings > General > Software update. If an update is available, you will see a list to download and install.
Click Download and Install, and the latest version of Apple’s iOS software will be installed on your iPhone. The current version of iOS at the time of writing this guide is iOS 16.4.1. This is a great way to rule out certain bugs in Apple’s software that may be causing a problem with your device.
Disable background app refresh for some apps
One way to reduce your handsets battery drain is to turn off background app refresh for some of your apps. It should be noted that some apps need to enable this feature to work fully. You might want to keep background app refresh enabled for things like email and messages etc, but there are many apps that might not need this feature.
To disable this feature for specific apps on your iPhone, go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh. You will now see a list of all your apps on your iPhone and next to it is a slider, when the feature is on for that app it’s green, when it’s off it’s grey.
It’s worth looking at all the apps you have installed on your iPhone to see if you actually need to enable this feature for that particular app. Disabling them on a bunch of apps that don’t need them can improve your battery life and reduce drain.
You can also disable the feature entirely so none of your apps use it. This is generally not recommended as many apps require the feature. It’s better to turn them off for individual apps that don’t need them.
To turn off Background App Refresh completely, go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and then select Off. This will completely disable this feature on your iPhone.
Manage location services
Another thing that can help you improve battery life on your iPhone is customizing location services on your device. To access this setting on your iPhone, go to Settings > Privacy & Security and then Location Services.
You will now see a list of applications that use this feature and you can decide which ones you want to allow using location services and which ones you don’t. Some apps will not function properly if these settings are disabled.
Apps like Apple Maps and Google Maps and similar applications won’t work properly when location services are turned off, so it’s worth figuring out which ones need them and which ones don’t.

By following some of the tips above, you can significantly reduce battery drain and increase the overall battery life of your device.
