Getting a brand new iPhone is always an exciting experience, but now that you’ve copied all your data and set up your new iPhone, it’s time to transfer your eSIM from your old iPhone to the new one so you can finally get your number can use on your new phone. Well, transferring an eSIM might sound a bit tricky, but it’s not. It’s pretty easy. I tried it myself and got my eSIM transferred from my old iPhone to the new one within 4 hours. So here is a complete step-by-step guide for you.

Before I continue with the steps, make sure you have an internet connection and that both your old and new iPhone are updated to iOS 16 or later. Once you have done that, follow these steps:

How to transfer eSIM manually

Go to Settings > Cellular Data > Set Up Cellular Service.

You will be shown all cell phone numbers that you use in your old iPhone – whether e-SIM or physical.

If your telecom provider doesn’t support automatic eSIM transfer, you’ll see “Transfer Not Supported” just below your number. In this case, you need to contact your telecom provider and send the necessary messages. For example, if you are using a Jio e-SIM, you need to download the My Jio app, verify your email ID and send this text – GETESIM to 199. For Airtel send this text – ‘eSIM’ to 121 and for Vodafone Idea , send this text – ‘eSIM to 199.

Once this is done, you will receive a confirmation email stating that your eSIM transfer is in progress.

How to transfer eSIM automatically

There are two other ways to transfer your eSIM – one is the “Transfer from a nearby iPhone” option and the other is using a “QR code”.

To do this, go to Settings > Mobile data > Set up mobile service. At the bottom of your screen, tap More Options. You will be presented with two options: “Transfer from nearby iPhone” and “QR code”.

If you choose the option of Transfer from Nearby iPhone, you will get a notification on your old iPhone. Tap Next and enter the verification code you received on your new iPhone. Once this is done, your eSIM will be transferred.

If you choose the QR code option, you will need to call your telecom provider and ask them for a QR code. Scan the code with the camera app and tap it when you see the Cellular Plan Detected notification. Then tap Next at the bottom of your screen and add your data plan.

That’s it! These are the steps to transfer your eSIM from your old iPhone to your new one. However, remember that only one of these methods will work, depending on the type of eSIM transfer support your telecom provider offers.
