Suki Waterhouse opens up about her relationship with Robert Pattinson and what it’s like to navigate the ‘girlfriend of’ label following her high-profile romances with Batman actor and ex-boyfriend Bradley Cooper.
“You can’t expect the world to just understand everything,” says the British singer-actress, who next appears in the Riley Keough-directed miniseries Daisy Jones & The Six, in a new interview with the Sunday Times. “When you’re 21, you throw yourself headfirst into things and have absolutely no idea what the ramifications are.”
These repercussions can include spreading the word about your ex’s new relationship all over the internet. Waterhouse, now 31, was linked to musician Miles Kane from 2011 to 2013, Cooper (who has continued to this day and has a child with supermodel Irina Shayk) from 2013 to 2015, and Diego Luna from 2016 to 2017. One ex in particular, she told The British newspaper that she used her music to process a “colossal heartbreak” in her 20s.
“I was depressed for a while,” she says. “It took a long time. I think it was the breakup and also just being in my 20’s and in the friggin’ trenches.
Another disadvantage of a famous ex: “You keep reading how much nicer the new girlfriend is or whatever,” adds the former model, citing “public humiliation”. [and] a lot of shame.” “It sounds silly, but when you’re actually the one who’s heartbroken, it’s pretty hard.”
But things have changed since falling for Pattinson, 36, in 2018. The almost five-year-old couple now live together in London.
“Oh God, what on earth am I writing about now?” Speaking of the romance, the ‘Totally Healed’ star says: “I always get incredibly excited when I see his name come up [on my phone] or even a text and I think he feels the same way about me. We always have so much to say and I find it hilarious.”

She adds, “I’m shocked that I’ve been this happy with someone for almost five years.” According to Waterhouse, she and Pattinson – whose exes also include Twilight co-star Kristen Stewart and former fiancee FKA Twigs – not separated for more than two months.
“The other day I had two days off and it was like, no question, I’m going back to see him,” says Waterhouse, who toured the US last year in support of her album release. “Then he’ll come out for a few days.”
While they have their careers in common — “Rob definitely doesn’t get any advice from me about acting, but of course I’ll try to get him to help me with an audition before he falls asleep on the sofa,” says Waterhouse — his one high profile couple has its complications. Waterhouse says it’s her boyfriend who is most bothered by the paparazzi’s attention.
“It’s part of his part to wear a mask,” she says. “But he thinks people chase him even when we’re on the couch. He just has that mentality.”
Meanwhile, Waterhouse has children in mind and tells the newspaper that she would like to be a mother when she grows up.
“You have to say, ‘I’m going to be a sedentary cow for a while,’ but it will be worth it,” she says, laughing. “I can barely wait for it. I wish you could click your fingers to make it happen.”
