India’s thrilling super-over win over Australia in 2nd Women’s T20I breaks the internet

With over 40,000 spectators, the Indian and Australian women’s cricket teams put on a spectacle at the 2nd T20I of the 5 match series in Mumbai. The match turned out to be a humdinger as both teams scored 187 runs pushing the match into a super over. In the one-over eliminator, Smriti Mandhana propelled India to a 20-run score while Renuka Singh Thakur played well with the ball to ensure Australia didn’t end up chasing the 21-run goal.

India’s thrilling victory, along with crowd support, broke the internet as fans, ex-cricketers and pundits took to Twitter to hail the cricket competition, which was being played at the DY Patil Sports Academy.

Even Smriti Mandhana, who was named Player of the Match for her superb show with the racquet, said it was one of the best matches she has ever attended.

“Hunting, I think, is fun for everyone on the Indian team. However, we also need to work on setting overall numbers. As they batted I realized it was an amazing wicket, I had my eye on a big goal. I didn’t mean to make the same mistake as the last innings. I’m glad such wickets are prepared for women’s cricket, you will score high scores and high run chases. I think this is one of the most entertaining games we’ve all been to,” she said after the game.

India needed 14 from the last over, bowled by Megan Schutt, and Devika Vaidya managed to find two fours to make 187 for 5 and tie the game, forcing the game into the super over.

The home team put on 20 runs in super over-bowling from Heather Graham thanks to a six and a four from Mandhana after Richa Ghosh smashed the first ball to the max.

Renuka Thakur was able to defend that sum under extreme pressure after getting rid of Alyssa Healy, giving Australia their first loss of the year.
