Hyderabad: A video of 1983 world cricket champion Kapil Dev is going viral across social media platforms where he speaks out on mental health and depression.
As a guest of the Champions of Aakash 2022 program organized by an educational institute, Aakash BYJU’s, Kapil Dev spoke about how times have changed compared to the days when he was still practicing the sport.
“I often hear on TV that there is a lot of pressure on players to play in the IPL. Then I’ll just say one thing, don’t play. If a player has passion, there will be no pressure. I can’t understand those American terms, like depression. I’m a pawn and we play because we enjoy the game and there can’t be any pressure while we’re enjoying the game,” Kapil said.
Responding to the video, IPS officer Sukirti Madhav Mishra said in a tweet: “Please disagree sir.! Pressure, stress, depression – these are real things, even more so in today’s fast-paced and ambitious world.”
Former professional soccer player Darren Caldeira also expressed his disappointment, tweeting on his behalf: “Disappointing from Kapil Dev. So unrealistic. What is even more concerning is the laughter and applause that follows.”
Rushing in defense of the former skipper, journalist Abhijit Majumder tweeted: “Many of you are upset that Kapil Dev has poked fun at ‘pressure’ and ‘depression’. He did not do it. He ridiculed those who hide behind such words to hide their inaction or failure. He admonishes us to enjoy what we do. Those who shame him are pitiable. Get a fraction of what he has.”
While some were right that joy and pressure cannot coexist, others pointed to the generational gap between when Kapil played and the present.
Whatever side you’re on, it’s important to choose your words carefully for the sport’s greatest personality because he has an impact on young minds who watch him.
Please differentiate yourself sir.!
