BURLINGAME, CA–(BUSINESS WIRE)–For three decades kensington®, a global leader in desktop computing and mobility solutions for IT, business and home office professionals and The Professionals’ Choice, has maintained its role as an industry pioneer in developing innovative physical security solutions for laptops, peripherals and mobile devices. As the inventor of the laptop lock slot, Kensington has maintained its market leadership by solving the security challenges posed by the rapid evolution of mobile devices with innovative solutions that have set the standard for robust, dependable device security.
Protection and peace of mind for three decades
Ever since the invention of the Kensington Security Slot and the introduction of the original MicroSaver® Lock In 1992, more than 30 million Kensington locks were sold worldwide. The company’s portfolio of industry-leading locking solutions, along with technology devices, has evolved over the three decades to provide robust, industry-standard anti-theft protection that is compatible with 99 percent of laptops, projectors, printers and monitors with security lock slots.
Rising to the challenge of securing a new generation of compact devices from technology leaders such as HP, Lenovo, ASUS and others, Kensington has developed the Nano Security Slot, which is 70% smaller than the traditional slot, to secure ultra-thin and light devices and desktops secure peripherals. Kensington’s Slim NanoSaver has quickly become the new physical security standard for these next-generation devices® Winner of the prestigious Red Dot Award: Product Design 2022, 2.0 Keyed Locks feature an innovative cable head design that allows ultra-thin and 2-in-1 laptops to lay flat and stable on the surface for robust anti-theft protection without lifting provide the device from the surface or blocking ports.
The strongest and most reliable locks on the market
While the sight of a lock can be an effective visual deterrent, enterprise-level security requires a solution that has been engineered and tested end-to-end, from cable to lock head, to eliminate vulnerabilities and earn a reputation for being the industry’s strongest and most reliable Castles. Backed by an industry-leading five-year warranty, all Kensington key and combination locks exceed industry standards and undergo rigorous testing in a controlled environment by a third-party organization, stressing multiple samples of each lock until they fail to identify points of failure .
Kensington cables are made from turned carbon steel and coated to protect work surfaces from scratches. To ensure the cable cannot be easily cut or pulled apart, external pull tests apply tensile compression to measure the cable’s strength and the cable is subjected to a minimum shear cut test at a force of 1,000 pounds.
Cable type for Kensington lock | Use |
diameter |
strands | Minimum Tensile Strength (lbs) |
default | Most commonly used cable lock for laptops and tablets | 4.4 5.0 | 7×7 7×19 | 1000 |
Desktop Peripheral Kit | Lock multiple peripherals (monitor, desktop computer, wired keyboard, wired mouse) | 6.5 | 7×7 | 1000 |
Ultra | Superior strength, thicker carbon steel cable | 8-10 | 6×7 3×7 | 1,500 |
rolled up | Travel/portable locks | 3.5 | 7×7 | 250 |
Just as important as the strength of the cable is the ability of the locking head to remain locked in a device’s security slot when pulled. Kensington locks are designed and tested to withstand a minimum of 200 pounds of straight pull and 400 pounds of side pull. To test, pull on the right and left side and up and down until the lock is damaged. Kensington even tests to ensure the cosmetic integrity of its locks over time. Kensington locks are designed and tested to withstand extreme temperatures from -22 to 149 degrees Fahrenheit, cable and lock tip rotations up to 8,000 cycles, repeated 5-foot drops, repeated 3-foot impacts, vibration testing, and various additional tests Key and combination lock heads.

The company’s patented Hidden Pin™ technology, unique to Kensington’s keylocks, is an anti-picking feature that ensures the lock cannot be tampered with. Kensington NanoSaver laptop locks use a unique Cleat™ locking technology that works similar to bicycle cleats to securely grip the inner walls of a device’s nano slot and create a strong connection between the device’s frame and the lock to deter theft and secure impede. The slim nano lock head of Kensington NanoSaver locks pivots to allow ultra-thin devices to lie flat on a surface for ease of use without blocking ports.
