Kerala Actor Supporter Remarries Wife Under Special Marriage Act; triggers line | from Latest News India

The remarriage of lawyer and actor C Shukkur and his wife Sheena, former pro-vice chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University under the Special Marriage Act, 29 years after their marriage, sparked a social media storm. The duo got married on Wednesday and tied the knot again. But the purpose is what has drawn criticism. Her remarriage is intended to ensure her daughter’s “financial security,” which is not permitted under Muslim law. Her three daughters were also present at the remarriage event.

C. Shukkur came under attack after announcing his decision to marry his wife under the Special Marriage Act to ensure his property goes to his daughters and not his brother. The Fatwa and Research Council of Darul Huda Islamic University reportedly issued a fatwa against Shukkur. The fatwa was issued on Tuesday, the day before his remarriage. “Such thoughts are tragic consequences of not understanding Islamic principles…Allah is the true possessor of all wealth and possessions. They should be used as Allah has decreed,” the fatwa said, adding that a person can divide property among daughters if he or she is alive.

“True believers will not fall prey to such dramas that abuse religion for personal gain. They (true believers) will firmly oppose such heinous acts aimed at offending religious laws and weakening the morals of believers,” the fatwa said.

According to Muslim personal laws, which also regulate the inheritance of property, daughters receive only two-thirds of their father’s property and the rest goes to his brothers if there is no male heir.

Shukkur has responded to the fatwa and the criticism it has received, saying his decision is not intended to disregard any religious beliefs or break the morals of believers and therefore no “strong opposition” is required.

Famed sound designer Resul Pookutty congratulated the couple on their remarriage and said their move was an eye-opener for every liberal Muslim in the country. “Today, the step he took is an eye opener for every liberal Muslim in this country. I couldn’t be there for his “second marriage,” but I am with him in spirit and the courageous stand he took. All the best to you and your “newly married wife” and the family that comes with it,” Pookutty said in a Facebook post.
