This new law, effective January 1, 2023, requires proof of workers’ compensation on file with the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) for C-20 heating, ventilation, air conditioning and C-8 concrete contractors. From this date, no license will be issued, reinstated, reactivated, or renewed in these ratings without proof of workers’ compensation insurance.
The letters received were unexpected, as previously a sole owner of an HVAC or concrete company with no employees had no requirements for workers’ compensation insurance. Workers’ Compensation Insurance insures a company’s employees in the event of an accident at work.
The letter also lists important deadlines as follows.
If CSLB license renewal is due between January 1, 2023 and June 30, 2023: CSLB will not renew license without proof of workers’ compensation.
If CSLB license renewal is due after June 30, 2023: Proof of workers compensation insurance must be submitted to CSLB by July 1, 2023.
Effective July 1, 2023, any contractor with a C-8 or C-20 who has not submitted proof of worker’s compensation will have that rating revoked.
