Launched in 2015 with Android 5 as an environmentally conscious smartphone, the Fairphone 2 is now getting the ultimate software update after seven years since its launch, the company announced, thereby announcing that the second generation of the Fairphone is retiring .
In 2015, the company launched the Fairphone 2 for EUR 529.38 (about Rs 46,036.47) and the smartphone was restricted to residents of Europe. It sports a 5-inch 1080p display and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset, which the chipmaker stopped supporting in 2016. The chipset was paired with 2GB of RAM. Let’s take a look at the available details on the Fairphone 2 and its final software update.

Fairphone 2 receives its latest software update
In January 2023, the company announced that a final Fairphone 2 software upgrade for Android 10 would be available in March. Users can continue to use their smartphones normally after installation. Nonetheless, it will be the last upgrade in terms of software support. If there’s a bug that customers think will be fixed, “it won’t happen anymore.”
The smartphone will lag behind in terms of security upgrades from March 2023. The company advised consumers not to use apps that access critical data after May 2023; If there’s a serious vulnerability that the Fairphone 2 is vulnerable to, the company said it’s unable to fix it
Several security-critical apps, such as B. banking apps, will eventually see the device as obsolete and stop working. That’s certainly a few years away, but since it’s app-dependent, it’s difficult to predict when it might happen. Normal applications will continue to work for many years to come, the company explained in a blog post earlier this year.
When asked by a user on Twitter if there was a Fairphone running Android 13, the company replied that it plans to upgrade the Fairphone 4 to the latest Android 13 between April and December this year. However, it refrained from giving further details.
