A Brazilian lawyer tragically died after his gun was discharged by the magnetic field of an MRI machine at the hospital.
The freak accident happened on Jan. 16 when gun-loving lawyer named Leandro Mathias de Novaes was taking his mother to Laboratorio Cura in São Paulo, Jam Press reported. Unbeknownst to hospital staff, the attorney had a registered firearm in his possession.
Staff reportedly asked the couple to remove all metal objects before entering the MRI room, as is customary in hospitals due to the machine’s strong magnetic field. However, Novaes decided to go inside without announcing his hidden weapon.
Disaster struck after the machine ripped the gun from his waistband, causing it to go off, hitting the lawyer in the stomach. He was then taken to São Luiz Morumbi Hospital, where he remained for weeks before finally succumbing to his injuries on February 6.

After the accident, a Laboratorio Cura spokesman released a statement in which they claimed they had followed all “accident prevention protocols” as was standard practice in all MRI units.
“Both the patient and his companion were duly briefed on the procedures for entering the examination room and warned against removing all metal objects,” they explained.
The facility’s PR added that both Novaes and his mother signed a form regarding the logs, but the attorney failed to mention his gun and entered the unit with it “of his own choosing.”
A police investigation confirmed the gun was registered and the attorney had a valid license to use it.

Novae’s death rocked the Sao Paulo Bar Association. “It is with deep regret that OAB Cotia shares with all of our fellow attorneys the unexpected loss of our dear friend and attorney, Dr. Leandro Mathias de Novaes,” a spokesman for the Brazilian Bar Association in Cotia said in a statement. “We regret the loss and join his family in this moment of pain.”
Before his death, Novaes had frequently posted pro-weapon content to his more than 8,000 followers on TikTok.
This isn’t the first time someone has died in an unusual MRI accident. In 2018, a 32-year-old Indian man died after being sucked into an MRI chamber while holding a metal oxygen tank.
