STANDISH, Maine — The 2023 Saint Joseph’s College men’s lacrosse schedule is available. The Monks will play 17 games this spring, beginning with a home game against the University of New England at 4 p.m. Tuesday, February 21.
With 10 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) games in play, seventh-year head coach Bill Cosentino (41-40, .506 @ SJC) has assembled an out-of-league schedule featuring teams from five different conferences. The Monks play CCC’s UNE and Wentworth Institute, Little East’s Plymouth State and Southern Maine, NEWMAC’s Emerson College, NESCAC’s Colby College and NECC-enemy New England College, an institution that will face GNAC by the start of the fall semester 2023
Saint Joseph’s finished the 2022 season with a 5-13 overall record and a 3-7 mark in conference play en route to securing the #8 seed in the GNAC tournament. Playing at the top-ranked Norwich University in the first round of the tournament, the Monks nearly pulled off a monumental upset by taking a 12-10 lead in the fourth quarter, but eventual GNAC champion Cadets fended off an early elimination by four unanswered goals from the last frame to defeat St. Joe’s 14-12.
GAMES TO SEE:
March 22 in Southern Maine: The Monks have defeated the Huskies in four straight encounters and will be looking for a fifth-straight finish at Gorham with a matchup earlier in the season. St. Joe’s surpassed USM 16-7 at the SJC Athletics Complex last spring.
March 28 vs. Lasell: Saint Joseph’s have never beaten Lasell (0-10) but narrowly defeated the Lasers last season and lost 10-6 in Newton on April 13. The Monks will take another hit at home against the perennial conference contenders for the first time since 2019 in their third GNAC game of the season.
April 8 vs Norwich: Although Saint Joseph’s have never topped Norwich (0-14), the Monks will look to prove their near-upset of the Cadets in the first round of the 2022 tournament was no fluke. The conference competition will be the first of four straight GNAC home games as St. Joe’s look to gain momentum in the postseason.
