A total of 18.98 million mobile phones were shipped in China in August 2022, down 21.9% year-on-year and 4.7%, according to new figures from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), a department of China’s Ministry of Industry. month-on-month equals Information Technology (MIIT).

Of the total August shipments, 14.27 million or 75.2% were 5G handsets, 4.53 million or 23.9% were 4G handsets and the remaining 0.18 million or 1.0% were 3G and 2G cell phones.

A total of 175.13 million mobile phones were shipped in China in the 8 months from January to August 2022, down 22.9% year-on-year. Of these, 138.17 million or 78.9% were 5G phones, 35.46 million or 20.2% were 4G phones and the remaining 1.50 million or 0.9% were 3G and 2G phones.

A total of 17.87 million mobile phones were shipped in China by domestic mobile brands in August, down 21.6% year-on-year and 2.2% mom, accounting for 94.2% of all mobile phone shipments. Smartphone shipments totaled 18.14 million units, down 21.4% yoy and 5.1% mom, accounting for 95.6% of all handsets shipped in August in China.

In the 8-month period from January to August 2022, 151.34 million mobile phones were shipped by domestic mobile phone brands in China, down 25.8% year-on-year and accounting for 86.4% of the total mobile phone shipments. During the same 8-month period, smartphone shipments accounted for 171.06 million or 97.7% of all mobile phones shipped in China.

In August, 48 new mobile phone models were launched in China, down 15.8% year-on-year but up 118.2% month-on-month. Of the total new handset models launched during the month, 20 or 41.7% were 5G models, 26 or 54.2% were 4G models and 2 or 4.2% were 3G or 2G models; 38 or 79.2% of the new mobile phone models were domestic brands and 43 or 89.6% were smartphone models.

In the 8-month period from January to August 2022, 271 new mobile phone models were launched in China, down 8.4% year-on-year; Of these, 141 or 52.0% were 5G models, 126 or 46.5% were 4G models, and 4 or 1.5% were 3G or 2G models. Of the total new mobile phone models launched from January to August 2022, 248 or 91.5% were domestic brands and 229 or 84.5% were smartphone models.

Only phones delivered through official channels are included, meaning gray market or knockoff phones are not included in the CAICT numbers. “Shipped” means only that the manufacturer has shipped the handset to a wholesaler or retailer where it may or may not have been sold to a consumer during the discussion month.
