Meta’s AR, VR product roadmap for the next four years has been leaked, AR glasses could hit the market in 2027

Meta introduced its high-end Quest Pro virtual and mixed reality headset last October. Now, the Facebook parent appears to be investing heavily in its Metaverse plans with a barrage of AR (augmented reality) and VR (virtual reality) products. Meta is reportedly preparing to release its first single-display smart glasses in 2025, along with a neural interface smartwatch designed to control them. According to the report, Meta’s AR glasses are set to be officially launched sometime in 2027. The social media giant’s potential roadmap for this year is likely to include a Quest 3 headset. It could also introduce a headset codenamed Ventura in 2024.

A report from The Verge has leaked Meta’s possible roadmap for multiple AR and VR products in 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2027. The report, which cites employees at Meta’s Reality Labs division, says the Meta Quest 3 headset with mixed reality experiences will be unveiled later this year. The flagship headset is expected to cost more than the current Quest 2 and could be twice as thin and powerful as its predecessor. The Meta Quest 3 could contain 41 new apps and games.

As a reminder, the Quest 2 was introduced with a starting price of US$399 (roughly Rs.32,000). Meta’s vice president of VR reportedly confirmed that it has sold nearly 20 million Quest headsets to date. According to the report, he also acknowledged that the current quest is struggling to engage new users.

The report also suggests that the Mark Zuckerberg-led company plans to ship a more “accessible” headset, codenamed the Ventura, next year. From there, the company could introduce an advanced headset, codenamed La Jolla, with photorealistic codec avatars.

Additionally, the report, which quotes Alex Himel, Meta’s vice president of AR, says the company will unveil the second generation of its Ray-Ban Stories this fall. The augmented reality glasses were developed in collaboration with Ray-Ban parent company Luxottica.

In 2025, the company will reportedly unveil third-generation smart glasses with a “viewfinder” display to view incoming text, scan QR codes, and translate text from another language in real time. The glasses will be released with a “neural interface” strap that allows users to control them through hand gestures. In addition, Meta is also reportedly developing a smartwatch that works with smart glasses.

Additionally, Meta is reportedly considering unveiling its long-rumored AR glasses, codenamed Orion, internally to employees in 2024. It could be launched to the public after 2027.
