Michael Cera says he doesn’t own a smartphone or use social media, and that lifestyle choices may have had a negative impact on his Hollywood career.
The Arrested Development, Scott Pilgrim and Superbad star made the comments while promoting his new drama The Adults, which premieres at the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival this weekend.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Cera – known for being a very private person – was asked if he made a “conscious choice” not to be on social media.
“It doesn’t feel conscious. I guess it’s just something I haven’t decided to do,” he replied.
“Because everyone is doing it, it feels like a lot of choice, but it’s just not interesting to me.”
However, he then added: “But I don’t have a smartphone either and it’s a conscious decision because to be honest I’m a bit scared of it. Like I’m really losing control of my waking life.
“Right back when people started having smartphones, when Blackberries were around, I was having lunch with a friend who was my best friend at the time, and he’d just gotten a Blackberry.
“All through the meal he was typing emails and I sat lonely and bored. So I had a dislike for her from an early age.
“For many years people resented my lifestyle choices, but now people say they envy them.”
The actor was then asked if he thought his inactivity on social media was having an impact on his career, especially with many producers now looking to stars with large online followings to promote projects.
“I really don’t know the answer to that, but it’s very possible,” he replied.
“I mean, I definitely don’t have influence in that category, so I don’t think I’ll be considered if that’s an important thing.”
Cera described himself as a “very sensitive person,” adding that he’s not entirely comfortable being in the spotlight.
“I think when you get really famous you’re like a magnet for people and all kinds of people come up to you and I just can’t handle it,” he explained.
“I’m not really cut out for that level of interaction with so many different guys. I don’t have a strong personality for that.”
Along with The Adults, Cera will be appearing in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie this year and is currently starring in Amy Schumer’s Life & Beth series.
