Missing dad’s wife’s agony as trolls and ‘social media detectives’ fuel speculation

“Social media detectives” suggesting “third party involvement” in the disappearance of a beloved Salford father “stoke speculation,” his devastated wife said.

Boothstown resident Peter Baglin, 55, disappeared nearly 10 weeks ago after taking an evening stroll along the Bridgewater Canal to “clear his head”. He was spotted on surveillance cameras at a local petrol station on East Lancashire Road buying a small bottle of whiskey. On a call minutes later, he reassured wife Michelle he would be home soon – but he never returned.

As well as hundreds of messages of support and goodwill, Michelle, his partner of almost 30 years, has also had to deal with a series of slurring comments from trolls in recent weeks, some of which suggested Peter “may have cheated” and ” doesn’t do”. want to be found”.

The emergence of “social media detectives” echoes the recent case of tragic mother Nicola Bulley, who went missing in Lancashire before her body was recovered from the River Wyre weeks later.

Lancashire Police had previously targeted a number of TikTok investigators who were regularly filmed near where Nicola Bulley was last seen and shared various conspiracies in online posts. It prompted police to implement dispersal orders in the area and council leaders to condemn acts of “social media idiocy.”
