JACOBS FIELD, MOBILE, Ala. – The University of Mobile Baseball program led by the fourth-year head coach Jon Seymour, opened the 2023 season on Tuesday night, January 31 at Jacobs Field, winning with an impressive 8-7 win over fourth-place LSU-Shreveport Pilots. LSU-Shreveport begins the 2023 season ranked 4th in the 2023 NAIA Baseball Preseason Top 25 Coaches’ Poll and moves into the bottom four of last season’s NAIA World Series in Lewiston, Idaho while holding an overall record of 53-8 completes. With the LSU-S bringing back the bulk of last year’s roster, there was little to no intimidation on Mobile’s side as the Rams pulled off a big upset win in front of home fans earlier in the year.
Start and end with the long ball
After a scoreless top half of the first inning, Mobile newcomer served Michael Sike, Tucker Musgrove started the bottom half of the first with a towering opposite field homer on only the second pitch seen. However, LSU-S managed to respond with a two-run third inning, but Mobile rejoined the lead a half-inning later.
Right fielder starting Trevor Andrews, another newcomer for Mobile, was given the green light on a 3-1 count with full bases and blasted a grand slam into midfield to put the Rams back ahead 5-2 in the third. The LSU-S managed a solo shot of their own to pick up a run back in the fourth round, but the Rams added two more runs in the bottom half. Entering the back half of the game, Mobile led 7-3.
The LSU-S Pilots eventually managed an offensive run in the middle innings and put together a four-run fifth inning to eventually tie the game. In a 7-7 tie, pitching on both sides scored two straight frames through the eighth inning. Down in eighth senior Trevor Wells hit a go-ahead solo home run to put Mobile back in front. Mobile Head Coach Jon Seymour then turned to Tucker Musgrove, starting midfielder who is also listed as a pitcher to end things in the ninth on the mound where he managed to record a 1-2-3 inning to seal the upset win and his first save of the year to gain. After moving from right field to Pitcher’s Mound in the top of eighth, Trevor Andrews was marked as the winning pitcher.
Throughout Tuesday’s game, Andrews finished 2-for-4 on the plate and counted four RBIs from his grand slam in the third. Andrews threw a 1-2-3 scoreless eighth and worked two ground outs and a fly out on just 13 pitches. Tucker Musgrove scored three hits in the win and finished with a line of 3-for-4, HR(1), RBI, 3 Rs. Musgrove hit a hitter in his scoreless ninth inning of work on the mound.
As a team, the Rams scored 11 and were clean on defense and didn’t make any mistakes. The mobile pitching team hit seven earned runs in nine innings of work and allowed 12 LSU-S hits. A total of 10 pitchers conquered the mound on Tuesday on both sides.
