What you need to know Google is introducing a new policy for Play Store app developers. Developers should provide users with an easy way to request deletion of accounts and data. The changes will be visible to the user in Google Play from early 2024.
Google is constantly making changes to the Play Store to give users more control over their data. In a new post on its developer blog on Wednesday, the company highlighted a new ability that would allow consumers to delete their accounts and information from an app.
With the new policy, Google requires that any app that allows for account creation must also provide an easy way to delete accounts. This is a process that should be allowed both through the app and online, the latter preventing users from having to reinstall an app to delete their account.
The policy also requires that in addition to account deletion, users must also be given the option to request removal of their associated data from the app. As Google points out, this should happen when users request account deletion, but developers can also give users other ways to delete data.
Bethel Otuteye, Google’s Senior Director of Android App Safety, says in the blog post that “Users who may not want to completely delete their account may want to delete other data only when appropriate (such as activity history, images, or videos). ).” Developers must also disclose what data they intend to retain, but these data retention practices must be for specific reasons, such as: security, fraud prevention or regulatory compliance.

This new policy builds on the new “Data Security” section that was introduced to the Play Store last year. This is where developers describe their data collection practices to give consumers more context before they decide to download an app. Developers also use this section to demonstrate how consumers can remove their data from an app, but the new policy takes it a step further by giving users a “more consistent way to request it.”
Developers have until December 7th to submit answers to data deletion questions, and the new data will appear on the Play Store in early 2024. Developers can also request an extension before May 31, 2024 to comply with the new policy.
