No Man’s Sky consistently contributes to its quest to become one of video game’s greatest redemption stories with regular, major updates, and the next one is no exception. The upcoming Fractal update will actually make Hello Games’ open universe space sim prettier almost seven years after its original launch.
No Man’s Sky Fractal Update Trailer
The studio is positioning the Fractal update as a PlayStation VR2-centric patch, as it overhauls how the game is played on VR headsets just in time for Sony’s new peripheral. This includes being able to move your personal force field with your non-dominant hand to make it easier to parry enemy attacks, as well as overhauling mechanics like base building and navigating the galaxy map with new controls to make them more intuitive for VR users . But while the VR updates are nice if you’re not playing No Man’s Sky with a headset, the Fractal Update also improves the game’s HDR lighting to enhance the visual experience across the board.
The comparison shots the studio uses in their blog post e are quite contrasty. The new lighting doesn’t feel like it’s lost No Man’s Sky’s colorful, neon-soaked visual identity, but without the blinding flashes of light, it’s easier to see and appreciate the smallest details, and notice higher-contrast colors in their place. That looks great.

Along with VR changes and a visual update, No Man’s Sky is also getting some tweaks for the Switch, including the addition of Nexus missions, a new home screen that makes it easier to choose between playing alone or with friends, and custom descriptions for that options menu . Also exciting are new accessibility features, which include changes to mechanics like automatic resource scanning to help people who are having trouble using the game’s default key presses, as well as options to change the menu text size as words are getting bigger should.

No Man’s Sky is seven years old and even Hello Games is still releasing huge free updates. Fractal is fairly heavily focused on PlayStation VR2, but there’s plenty here for the general player base, regardless of what system they’re playing on. It’s really impressive to see how far the game has come and continues. And now it looks even nicer, so watching those steps just got a little nicer now.
