Rare white deer sighted at Katarniya Ghat Wildlife Sanctuary by UP, forest official shares image

The albino fawn was spotted at Katarniya Ghat Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh on Monday morning

Indian Forest Service officials do an excellent job of informing and educating the public about a wide variety of flora and fauna. This time official Akash Deep Badhawan shared a photo of a rare albino deer on Twitter, which has intrigued social media users. The albino fawn was spotted at Katarniya Ghat Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh on Monday morning.

“To stay true to his slogan, Katarniaghat – Where is rare, an albino fawn was spotted this morning,” he wrote, sharing the image.

The image has gone viral on Twitter, and many users have been intrigued to see the rare creature, while some have worried for its safety. Other officials and bureaucrats also reacted to the photo and shared their thoughts.

IFS employee Susanta Nanda spoke of a similar sighting in Odisha’s Angul district 15 years ago. “Golden deer were part of the Ramayana. Here’s a silver deer shared by @aakashbadhawan. Saw one at Labangi guest house in Angul district 15 years ago,” he wrote.

“Wow so must plan to visit Katarniaghat again soon – where rare is common,” wrote one. Another wrote “great”. A third expressed concern, saying: “It’s easy prey for predators.”

According to National Geographic, albino animals have partial or complete loss of pigment. In mammals, albinism occurs when an individual inherits one or more mutated genes from both parents that affect the body’s production of melanin.

Albino wildlife can encounter obstacles in nature as they have poor eyesight, which puts them at a disadvantage when hunting for food and avoiding danger. They also have trouble finding a mate, and their inability to camouflage makes them vulnerable to predators.
