Preview: India begins their quest for a first world title when they take on neighbors and arch-rivals Pakistan in their opening match of the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup on Sunday at Newlands Stadium in Cape Town.
While the Indians are undefeated in their head-to-head record against the Pakistanis at ODI World Championships, the Pakistanis have twice defeated them at T20 World Championships, including the 2016 edition hosted by the Women in Blue. However, India still has the upper hand in the overall balance, leading the H2H count 4-2 which they will expand later today.
However, the Women in Blue suffered a major blow before the game when opening player and vice-captain Smriti Mandhana was out with a finger injury. However, the good news for them is that Captain Harmanpreet Kaur is fit and ready to fight after recovering from a shoulder pain.
India had previously participated in a triangular T20I series in South Africa, which also featured the West Indies alongside the Proteas. The Indians were unbeaten until the final on February 2, where a heroic half-century from Chloe Tryon helped the South Africans win by five wickets.
