The former commissioner of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
After official missions in western and southern Africa, she flew back to Ethiopia on Friday 23 September.

During her stay abroad, Akombe was involved in various assignments of the Sub-Regional Center of the United Nations Development Program for West and Central Africa (UNDP WACA).

Move to Ethiopia
Akombe moved to Kenya’s northern neighbors from the US in 2021 to take up a position with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Ethiopia.

Sharing the news of her appointment on her Twitter page, Akombe said she was excited about the new journey, while explaining that she has a passion for development.
The outspoken Kenyan will serve as the coordinator for governance and peacebuilding in Africa at the regional hub in the city of Addis Ababa.
“After 14 years on the political side of the @UN family, I’m happy to switch to my other passion – development. I am thrilled to join @UNDP today as the Africa Governance and Peacebuilding Coordinator at the Regional Hub in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Here’s to new beginnings! #HappyNewYear,” she wrote.
She fled Kenya in 2017 amid uncertainties surrounding the presidential re-election.
Despite her physical absence from Kenyan soil, Akombe has always been heard in Kenya’s internal affairs.
