Preview RCB vs GG: Royal Challengers Bangalore hope to stay afloat in the playoff race when they take on the Gujarat Giants in Game 16 of the first Women’s Premier League at Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday.
The Royal Challengers, led by Smriti Mandhana, got off to a disastrous start despite being a star-studded side, losing five straight games and appearing on course to be the first team eliminated.
RCB, however, managed to break their five-game winless run with a five-wicket win over the UP Warriorz on Wednesday, the victory hanging their playoff hopes by a thread. Star all-rounder Ellyse Perry’s 3/16 helped RCB throw UPW for 135 after they decided to field.
Kanika Ahuja then went ahead with the bat, smashing a 30-ball 46 and forging valuable partnerships with Heather Knight (24) and Richa Ghosh (31 not out) as Bangalore chased down the 136-run goal by two overs.
Gujarat would also keep its playoff hopes alive by beating Delhi Capitals by 11 runs the following day, with Laura Wolvaardt (57) and Ashleigh Gardner (51 not eliminated and 2/19) playing central roles in the win.
