Of the entire US population, 62% are eligible to donate blood, but only about 3% of the eligible population donate.
In less than 45 minutes, a blood donor could help save up to three lives with their donation. For those who are new to giving or haven’t donated in a while, the Houchin Community Blood Bank makes the donation process quick and easy. If someone wants to donate, there are only 4 simple steps that every donor has to go through:
– Registration: Donors bring photo ID with their date of birth and report to one of our team members when they come to a blood drive. The donor will be instructed to review our donor information material and complete HCBB’s donor questionnaire. Donors can also complete their donor questionnaire on the day of their scheduled appointment to save some time.
– Screening: When the donor’s name is called, they are directed to one of our private screening rooms, where a nurse/phlebotomist will ask them confidential health questions and perform mini-physics (temperature, hemoglobin levels, blood pressure, etc.).
– Donation: Once a donor has passed the screening, the donor will be directed to a blood donation chair. Once you’re seated, the actual donation takes about 8-10 minutes.
– Recovery: After a donor makes a donation, they receive snacks and refreshments to replenish their body while relaxing for about 15 minutes.
