graphics and aesthetics
This game is based on the classic arcade games of the 80’s/90’s. That’s no surprise since the Ninja Turtles are a product of that era. As such, the pixelated graphics, music, and amazing animated intro have a classic style. Not only that, you’re given a short cutscene at the start that looks like it’s straight out of an NES title. It’s a great game to consider if you used to spend a few quarters on games like this.
Since this is a game inspired by classic arcade games, you can expect the gameplay to be similar. It’s a straightforward beat ’em up that lets you play as one of several characters from the franchise. You can play as one of the four Turtles, Master Splinter or April.
After a brief cutscene detailing what’s going on, you’re thrust straight into the action. On the left side of the screen you will see a classic D-Pad. You can press the buttons one at a time or slide your finger across them to change direction. You can also double tap it to make a dash.
On the right side of the screen you have your action buttons, and there are quite a few of them. You have your basic attack button, jump, jump attack and jump back buttons. After filling a small meter, your special attack button will appear.
As for attacks, pressing the attack button will cause your character to perform a basic attack, and holding it will cause your character to perform a charged attack. When you press the jump attack button, your character will jump, hitting the character along the way. When attacking in the air, they perform a downward attack.
If you attack while sprinting, your character will perform an attack. If you walk towards an enemy, your character will grab it. From that point you can slam or throw them. There’s a fun attack where you throw the enemy onto the screen.
That being said, there are pick-ups in the form of pizzas (because, you know, Ninja Turtles) along the way. One gives you health, one gives you unlimited specials for a limited time, and more.
