Social media reacts to the Hawkeyes’ loss at Illinois

Iowa went to Champaign, Illinois to extend an eight-game winning streak over Illinois dating back to the Hawkeyes’ 30-14 win over the Fighting Illinois on November 15, 2014.

Instead, Iowa saw that winning streak shattered and the Fighting Illini earned their first win over the Hawkeyes in their last nine tries. Illinois slipped past Iowa 9-6 thanks to a trio of Fabrizio Pinton field goals of 27, 37 and 36 yards. The final pinton field goal was sent through with 2:49 remaining.

At first it looked like Illinois would never have that chance for the game-winning field goal. However, a scoop-and-score Iowa fumble return touchdown for Riley Moss was nullified after a review after it became clear Artur Sitkowski’s elbow and forearm were down before losing the ball.

Then, as had been the case all night, the Hawkeyes’ offense couldn’t deliver with the play on the line. Looking for a game-defining field goal or the go-ahead touchdown, Iowa drove to its own 47-yard line, but starting quarterback Spencer Petras was hit on a throw and intercepted by Illinois’ Matthew Bailey.

The Hawkeyes got one last chance even after that. Iowa’s defense forced a quick three-and-off, the Hawkeyes exhausted all their timeouts to get as much game clock as possible, and Iowa recovered football at their own 16-yard line with 1:12 left.

After a 13-yard connection from Petras to Nico Ragaini and a defensive pass interference on Illinois, the football moved to the Iowa 42-yard line and the Hawkeyes backed up from there. Petras was dismissed for a loss of seven, the Hawkeyes conceded holding and false start penalties, and then the final lateral try ended in a final lateral out of bounds.

Along the way, there was plenty of social media reaction to another offensive night that left Iowa fans scratching their heads. Here were the best reactions to the Hawkeyes’ loss on the internet.
