Telefonica, Ericsson and Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. announced today the launch of Spain’s first commercial 5G mobile millimeter (mmWave) network at Mobile World Congress 2023 in Barcelona.
This technological milestone will allow partners with compatible user devices to access the Ericsson operated Telefonica 5G mmWave network during the event. At the event, Qualcomm Technologies will showcase the wide range of global 5G mmWave devices powered by Snapdragon mobile platforms, driving the advancement of the industry.
Harnessing the 5G mmWave spectrum is the optimal way to achieve high speeds and high capacity, providing the best 5G experience in congested areas. Particularly interesting is the role of 5G mmWave in the area of Fixed Wireless Access, digitization and Industry 4.0, which offers extremely powerful coverage and enables the development of completely new use cases. Based on its high network capacity and exceptional performance boost, this 5G mmWave deployment will provide attendees of Mobile World Congress in Hall 3 at La Fira with an exceptional 5G user experience, enabling the ultra-fast, lower-latency mobile connectivity that is changing the way as they realize, will change mobile connectivity.
Telefónica is the only service provider in Spain to have acquired full 1 GHz spectrum, making Telefónica the first company to be able to offer download speeds above 5 Gbps and upload speeds of 1 Gbps in the future. This huge spectrum will enable the use of bandwidth-intensive applications such as multi-view cameras and user-generated content in crowded sports venues such as soccer stadiums. It will enhance immersive experiences like VR and AR, and equip industrial and manufacturing companies with the crucial communication tools they need to go fully wireless and become more competitive, using technologies like artificial intelligence and automation in a fully flexible environment.
The 5G mmWave deployment will cover Hall 3 of the Mobile World Congress Barcelona event, using a large mmWave spectrum bandwidth secured by Telefónica at the recent Spanish Spectrum Auction. Ericsson is providing its AIR 5322 mmWave radio and high-performance RAN processor 6651 coverage to enable 5G millimeter coverage. The radio access network equipment is powered by an Ericsson silicon chipset that enables industry-leading lightweight and energy efficiency benefits, as well as unique performance and innovative features.
Qualcomm Technologies 5G mmWave device bar at its booth (Hall 3, 3E10) will demonstrate 5G mmWave devices powered by Snapdragon mobile platforms, including premium commercial smartphones, PCs, CPEs, hotspots and more.
Millimetre-band connectivity offers multiple advantages that can target areas of intense traffic demand such as indoor and outdoor hotspots, enhance existing macro-city locations, densify urban and suburban street locations, or leverage macro-tower locations to extend fiber-like coverage Fixed wireless access service to complement Fiber optic expansion in difficult areas.
“This commercial deployment of 5G mmWave services, which we are launching as a result of our collaboration with Ericsson and Qualcomm Technologies, together with the massive spectrum Telefónica received in the last auction, is the latest milestone in a series of long-term 5G projects that Telefónica has developed over the last 3 years in collaboration with companies and institutions,” said Gerardo Rovira, Access Radio Director at Telefónica España. “It clearly shows Telefónica’s commitment to developing and leading a strong 5G ecosystem, which will be a key factor in delivering compelling services to both the public and private sectors.”
“Our collaboration with Telefónica and Qualcomm Technologies to deliver this 5G mmWave technology leap in Spain will dramatically transform the mobile connectivity experience for consumers and businesses, making it faster, more accessible and more reliable,” said Somaya El-Marrakchi, Head of Networks , Ericsson Iberia. “Millimetre band opens a new paradigm in deploying 5G technology, giving operators a powerful tool to complement existing network deployment strategy to increase performance and capacity for diverse needs.”
“We’re proud to continue working with industry partners like Telefonica and Ericsson to push the boundaries of connectivity and enable robust consumer experiences,” said Dino Flore, vice president, technology, Qualcomm Europe, Inc. “The first commercial deployment is showing The launch of commercial 5G mmWave services in Spain at MWC 2023 in Barcelona is an example of another significant milestone for 5G mmWave in Europe.”
