Usually in the morning my face looks like a balloon, my eyelids appear swollen and my cheeks appear swollen. This “balloon face” phenomenon can last into the afternoon and take hours to regain my face and feel like myself unless I invest some time in facial massages (while also juggling coffee cups, meetings, and a strong current of email notifications).
So when I found a gadget that could get rid of my balloon face in 15 minutes, tops—the latest version of NuFace’s pocket-sized skincare device, the Mini+—I was hooked. It’s a wearable, golden nugget of a tool that uses microcurrent technology to boost circulation, massage the face (thereby reducing puffiness) and tone the underlying muscles for long-term benefits as well.
To break it down, microcurrent technology uses low-voltage electrical currents to stimulate facial muscles, boosting collagen production and tightening muscles over time and with repeated use for a more defined, toned look. While doing all of that, the NuFace Mini+ device also helps drain fluid from the face instantly; and all of these benefits combine to create a more sculpted jawline and contoured cheekbones in minutes.

To use it, coat the skin with the brand’s conductive gel (which is included in the starter kit sold with the tool) — without it, the current won’t penetrate the skin. Hold the rechargeable device up to your face and move the two protruding balls in an upward motion, repeatedly following the contours of your face until you’ve treated your entire face – brow muscles, jawline, hollow cheeks, you name it. While most skincare products take months to deliver real results, NuFace’s microcurrent devices are designed to deliver both instant gratification and long-term results.

I’ve been using mine for several weeks, and along with my daily “balloon face” which is much easier to overcome, I’ve also noticed that on the days I’m not using my NuFace, my face looks more defined and toned. Seeing these lasting results got me hooked on the little tool.
While NuFace’s home microcurrent devices have been around for decades, this latest version is more compact and less expensive than previous models (although $245 isn’t exactly cheap). It also comes in a fun color palette, including black and purple, which is an upgrade from the usual white and silver tools.
The Mini+ starter kit, which includes the gel and an application brush, gave me everything I needed to get started on my daily NuFace routine. It’s pretty easy to get the hang of, but the brand also offers an app that pairs with the device via Bluetooth for step-by-step tutorials and tracking of selfie results.
