Street Fighter 5 is a very different game than it was 7 years ago when it was released and the game has built quite a competitive story around the world.
With the finals for the last SF5 Capcom Cup just a few hours away, we decided to look back at all 5 of the game’s World Finals events to see which players and characters had the most successful performances.
Because Capcom Cup IX is doing things differently this year by only running the top 16 for the main round, we’ve also narrowed the reach for all other Capcom Cups within the top 16 to specifically account for those that consistently make it furthest have done (and make the data more manageable).
The most popular/achieved characters in SF5’s Capcom Cup history aren’t too surprising considering that both Karin and R. Mika managed to garner 7 appearances as main picks at the tournaments, despite barely making any appearances this year had an impact.
However, some of the fighters that we generally consider top meta contenders, like Urien, Kolin, and Guile, are further down the list than you might expect.
In all 5 SF5 Capcom Cups, there were a total of 29 characters that made it into the top 16 at least once, leaving 11 others who never had a shot at the title, between Blanka, Sagat, Sakura, Falke (although 2 did made it to the group stage), Akira, Alex, Dan, E. Honda, G, Gill, Juri, Kage, Lucia, Oro, Rose and Seth.
Luke was obviously a newcomer compared to previous years, but Capcom Cup IX is also the first Finals where an Ed, Balrog, Vega, and Cody player has also made it this far.

As for the competitors themselves, we’ve managed to get 50 different players into the top 16 in 5 years, and only 19 of them have made it that far at least twice.
You obviously have the big names like Punk, Mouz|Problem X, Rohto|Tokido, Luffy and BST|Fuudo as consistent finalists up there, but there’s only one player who had an almost perfect score.
RZR|Xian is the only player who qualifies for the Capcom Cup every year for SF5 and has reached the top 16 in 4 of them, although unfortunately he was eliminated in the group stage this year, so he just barely maintains this impressive streak could.
Capcom Cup IX is shaping up to represent the newer talent as well as those who never gave up as there are 10 new players in the top 16 this year between UYU|NL, HB|Kawano, Takamura, M80|EndingWalker, BLG |Zhen , BLG|Vxbao, G8S|Pugera, M.Lizard, MADFGC|VegaPatch and Valmaster.
