OnePlus has confirmed that Chinese market units of its new Android flagship 11 will receive four major software updates as well as five years’ worth of security patch upgrades. The brand’s other new smartphones, the Ace 2 and 2V, will also get official support for their own versions of ColorOS, just not for as long. This announcement may or may not bode badly for the 11R, an Indian version of the 2.

OnePlus has just updated some guidelines for its Chinese customers to bring software support for flagship 11 units sold in the country in line with those for other markets. In other words, the smartphone now receives 4 major Android upgrades and security patch upgrades over 5 years, regardless of whether it uses OxygenOS or ColorOS.

The company has indicated that the commitment will cost it no less than 100 million yuan (~$14.6 million) in terms of related R&D; On the other hand, this investment can be worthwhile in terms of customer relationships and retention, not to mention competing with other OEMs like Google or Samsung.

Regardless of the reassurances from OnePlus 11 owners around the world, those who have instead opted for the cheaper Ace 2 flagship variant – or its own new budget alternative, the Ace 2V – may be wondering about their own coverage, especially given the the latter’s slightly less common Dimensity 9000 SoC.

In this case, the brand has announced that the support of these 2023 smartphones will be reduced by 1 year compared to the flagship line: 3 major upgrades and 4 years of patch upgrades. Accordingly, some Indian OnePlus fans might be wondering where the 11R (the Ace 2 rebranded for this market) might go, especially since its OxygenOS update predictions aren’t given anywhere on the product page.

Shortly after graduating, I became a professional writer and editor. My degrees are in biomedical sciences; However, they led to some biotech experiences that convinced me of their potential to revolutionize our health, environment and life in general. This evolved over time into an all-consuming interest in more and more aspects of technology: I can never write enough about the latest electronics, gadgets and innovations. My other interests are imaging, astronomy, and streaming all of those things. Oh, and coffee.
